Keeping toddlers entertained indoors doesn't need to mean expensive days out or hours in front of a screen. Whether the weather has turned, you're looking for something to do at the weekend or simply need some fresh ideas, there are plenty of indoor activities for toddlers in and around Fareham.
At Little Giggle Street in Whiteley, children can step into their own little world through imaginative role play. Here are a few simple indoor activities you can try at home.
Sometimes the simplest ideas are the most memorable. Grab an old bedsheet or duvet cover, a few cushions and some chairs and help your little one build their own indoor den. Add some blankets, favourite toys and a torch and you’ve suddenly created a secret hideaway. You could even let them sleep in it for the night if you’re feeling adventurous! Building a den is also a great example of imaginative play – the same space can become a castle, campsite, shop or spaceship depending on where their imagination takes them.
Drawing is inexpensive, easy to set up and gives children complete freedom to create. Rather than always giving them something specific to draw, try starting with a blank sheet of paper and asking what they’d like to make. You might be surprised where the conversation goes. Paints, colouring pencils, stickers, cardboard boxes and even old magazines can all become part of the activity.
Getting children involved in the kitchen can be messy, but it’s also a brilliant opportunity to spend time together while introducing an important life skill. Keep things simple. Make some biscuits, decorate cupcakes, prepare a pizza together or let them help mix ingredients for dinner. Along the way, children can practise counting, following instructions, measuring ingredients and learning about different foods – and they get to eat the results afterwards!
You don’t need lots of toys to encourage imaginative play. Turn your kitchen into a café, set up a pretend shop using tins from the cupboard or create a doctor’s surgery for teddy bears. Give your child a role and let them decide what happens next. There doesn’t need to be a right or wrong way to play. Letting children lead the story is part of the fun.
Lunch doesn’t always have to happen around the table. Put a blanket on the living room floor, prepare a few favourite snacks and have an indoor picnic together. You could combine it with your homemade den or invite a few teddy bears along too. It’s incredibly simple, but changing an everyday routine can turn it into an adventure for a young child.
