For young children, play is about much more than simply having fun. It is one of the ways they explore the world around them, practise new skills, communicate with others and begin to make sense of everyday life.
Role play is a particularly valuable part of this. Whether a child is pretending to run a shop, preparing dinner in a play kitchen, looking after a teddy bear or becoming a firefighter for the afternoon, they’re using their imagination while developing important skills along the way. At Little Giggle Street, role play is at the heart of what we do. Our play village in Whiteley has been designed to give children the freedom to explore familiar real-world environments, create their own stories and, importantly, decide where their imagination takes them.
The importance of play in early childhood is well recognised. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which sets standards for learning and development from birth to five in England, identifies games and play as an important part of how young children learn. The Department for Education also highlights role play as an opportunity for children to share ideas, explore language and become more comfortable using a wider range of vocabulary. In other words, when children are busy playing, they’re often learning at the same time.
Role play gives children opportunities to talk, listen and interact with others. When children play together, they begin to negotiate roles, share ideas and respond to what somebody else is doing. A pretend café might need a customer and someone taking an order, while a shop needs somebody behind the counter. These simple interactions provide opportunities to practise communication, cooperation and taking turns in a natural and enjoyable environment.
Give a child a cardboard box and it could become a car, a house, a spaceship or something an adult would never have considered. That’s the wonderful thing about imaginative play. There doesn’t always need to be a set outcome or a correct way to play. Giving children the freedom to invent characters, situations and stories encourages creativity and allows their imagination to lead the activity. UNICEF also recognises play as an important way for young children to explore, try new things and develop an understanding of the world around them.
Children naturally recreate things they see happening around them. Shopping, cooking, going to work, visiting a café or caring for somebody can all become part of their games. Through role play, children have an opportunity to recreate these familiar experiences and explore them in a way they understand. It can also introduce situations they haven’t experienced before, helping unfamiliar experiences become a little more familiar.
One minute they’re themselves; the next they’re running a shop, building a house or looking after somebody. Taking on different roles gives children an opportunity to make decisions and lead their own play. There is no pressure to get everything right, making imaginative play a great environment for experimenting, solving little problems and becoming more confident in their own ideas.
